Meet the Doctors
DR. AUSTIN C. POWELL, DMD
Dr. Powell opened Powell Pediatric Dentistry in 2012. Originally from Dothan, Alabama, he completed his undergrad degree at The University of Alabama, and earned his DMD at The UAB School of Dentistry.
He completed his pediatric dental residency in Chicago at Children’s Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University, where he served as Chief Resident in Pediatric Dentistry. During his pediatric training, Dr. Powell obtained extensive experience treating the oral health of children, adolescents, and patients with special needs.
Dr. Powell lives in Homewood with his wife Kari and their three children: Ella, Cal and Eve.
DR. AMY MAHER, DMD
Dr. Maher has been with Powell Pediatric Dentistry since 2023. Originally from Natchez, Mississippi, she completed her undergrad degree at Mississippi State University, and earned her DMD at the University of Mississippi.
She completed her pediatric dental residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She practiced in Birmingham for eight years before moving to Pensacola, Florida and then Spanish Fort, AL.
When Dr. Powell heard she was moving back to Birmingham, he was quick to offer her the Associate position because of her reputation of being one of the best Pediatric Dentists in Alabama.
Dr. Maher is married to Colby Maher and they have four children: Laurel, Hayes, Witt, and Morgan, and one grandchild, Franklin.

Brooke joined the Powell Pediatric Dentistry team in February 2018. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in Human Environmental Sciences. Before joining the dental field, Brooke gained experience in Human Resources and benefit management roles within the medical field and completed an internship at Atrium

Before joining the dental field, Brooke gained experience in Human Resources and benefit management roles within the medical field and completed an internship at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital in Macon, Georgia as part of her original goal to become a Child Life Specialist. As office manager, she enjoys keeping the office running smoothly, supporting the team, and making sure every patient feels cared for. Outside of work, Brooke enjoys spending time with family and friends, painting, tackling DIY projects and playing with her beloved dog, Macy.

Kate has been the Front Desk Coordinator and Appointment Scheduler since July 2020. She truly enjoys welcoming all the sweet, little faces that come into the office daily. When not at work, she's enjoying her time with husband Michael, her son Benjamin, and terrier/boxer mix pup, Bunny.

Aaron enjoys welcoming children and their families and making every visit a positive experience. Outside of work, he loves music and going to concerts with his wife and spending time with their dog.

Since obtaining her RDH license through the Alabama Dental Hygiene Program in 1999, Annette has spent the majority of her time working in pediatric dental care. She finds it rewarding to help provide children and their families with positive dental experiences.
When not making teeth “shiny and clean,” she's having fun with her family, her gym friends, or working in her yard.

Candace began her dental career in 1988, and has been a Hygienist for 30+ years.
She enjoys working with children and helping them understand the importance of clean healthy teeth. She loves that she can help them overcome fear in the dental setting starting at an early age. She loves her work family. We have the best team at PPD!

Rachel began her career in 2019 in oral surgery as an assistant. She then joined the PPD team and became a registered dental hygienist in 2023. She is a wife and a mama to a sweet baby boy born in 2025, and loves being with her family! In her free time she likes to play piano, read, garden and preserve/can goods.
